are more qualified to talk about this issue with students in my opinion. And sex education should not be a subject but a series of workshops for children at different levels. I mean, how much sex eduction does a kid need to know in a year???

Why I say counsellors is because counsellors are trained to not just offer advice and career guidance, but really, they are also trained in keeping an eye out for children with special problems and are supposed to be the ones who can figure them out. They are in a better position to know about kids' mental health than most teachers are. And sex ed deals much more about their mind as much as the physical aspects of their bodies.

Imagine what the things going through the mind of a child who is going through puberty - am i sick, is there something wrong with me? And counsellors are and should be one of the people whom these kids can trust as well. I'm saying this because I myself am undergoing training as a school counsellor too and am disappointed that the Ministry doesn't seem to give much emphasis on the importance of school counsellors. School counsellors should be the ones taking over Moral Education and help students grapple with issues like self-esteem, bullying, assertiveness, discipline and learning behaviours etc.

Of course, health experts such as school nurses (I cannot stress the importance of schools to have its own school nurse who can give a proper diagnosis!) are also better placed at providing information about sex as well.

Anyways, I really don't want kids to go through what I used to have gone through as a kid. I was a sadly misinformed kid due to no one around me telling me the truth about what's happening to my body. It was only in Form 3 did i realise the significance of my body parts and the changes happening in my body. Even then we only dealth with the physical, scietific aspect but what about other issues and ethics that comes part and parcel of the subject - like masturbation, sex abuse, promiscuity, abstinence, STDs and sex orientation. All these stuff I learnt through the Internet via the guidance of my friends, who aren't exactly trustworthy or accurate since they themselves are ignorant.

Well, that's all I'd like to say about this. The govt sure needs to do a lot of thinking before they implement this in schools. Until now, there's not even a squeak about sex ed in the ministry. Will it happen or will it not? Time will tell.

Warm regards,
