A single woman, unmarried, divorced, widowed……….they all means the same thing. It’s a woman without a partner.
Being single can be fun, but it can also be boring and lonely to some.
I love being single. It’s my choice to be single. But why does it bother a lot of people? Married new acquaintances and strangers often frown when I tell them I am single.
“What? Forty-something and still unmarried? You mean never been married?”
I can almost see the pity in their eyes and thoughts flashing through their minds…..Is she a lesbian? Is she a feminist? Has she been badly hurt? Is she bitter?.............
“ No……no……..no……..none of these things!’ I want to scream at the top of my voice. But I know that no amount of explaining can convince them that it is my choice to remain single. It has happened too often. It seems to me that everybody MUST be in a relationship to be happy, and if you are not, then, watch out.
I go to visit my mother and the first question she always ask it: “Have you met somebody yet?”…or the other version ….”Has your love life improved?”
The topic of conversation among her friends over the mahjong table is why am I not married. I would love to be a fly of the wall or a mahjong on the table. Mum even put me through ‘mandi bunga’ to get rid of bad luck. To be honest,
some people were funny and some outright insulting.
My married friends worried for me. Every potential single male within distance is a match for me. Never mind that they are not my type. If I introduce them to any of my male friends, I can hear wedding bells. So much so that I stopped taking any males within heir vicinity. My married friends are worried that I might be lonely in my old age. I know they are all concerned for me.
I have finally reached the stage where I do not care anymore what other people think, but have gone through endless discussions and arguments about this subject and it is tiring. Not everybody needs a partner to make their life fulfilling. There are people who survive by themselves and with themselves and like it that way. Leave us alone and concerns yourselves with your own relationships. Funnily enough, I cannot see much happiness there either.
Maybe someday, I might meet someone, but for now I am happy being single and I enjoy my freedom.
