To specifically address the needs of special women, we at eHomemakers started a pilot project in 2002 known as Salaam Wanita. The Salaam Wanita community is a group of aspiring home-workers and homepreneurs in the Klang Valley and Ipoh. Members include single mothers, homemakers, disabled, disabled dependents, low-income and unemployed women. Salaam Wanita members are mostly homebound because of physical disabilities or commitments such as being caregivers to disabled and chronically ill family members.
Consequently, they are economically constrained due to their inability to source for work/ business opportunities outside their homes. The Salaam Wanita programme is designed to empower these women to network and gain Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and entrepreneurial skills so that they become self-reliant economically. One of the core objectives of our network is to empower these women to rise above their circumstances and contribute effectively to the welfare of their family. An end-to-end poverty alleviation solution is applied to the Salaam Wanita project
In view of this, Salaam Wanita members have participated in various skills seminars and workshops. One of the most successful activities has been the basket-weaving sessions where groups of disadvantaged have been taught how to weave baskets from old magazines and newspapers. Today the women are on the road to economic self-reliance with their baskets being sold to various corporations and organisations. The Salaam Wanita baskets can be viewed at www.justmarketing.info, a website that has been constructed to exclusively market Salaam Wanita's products and services.
The Salaam Wanita project is very much dependent on the efforts of volunteers and donations from sympathetic organisations.
