ALTHOUGH using recycle bags to shop has only been enforced this year, Bukit Gasing assemblyman Edward Lee believes that taking one step at a time can do a lot in saving the environment.
“One change that I can see happening is the changing of our lifestyles from one that is so consumer-based to one that’s more earth-friendly,” Lee said especially with more people carrying their own bags since the Selangor government introduced the No Plastic Bag Day on every Saturday.
He added: “We can still do better. I believe that every baby step we make, no matter how small it is, can all collectively contribute towards making the future worth living for our children.”
Lee said this when launching the Earth Day Carnival at Ikano Power Centre in Mutiara Damansara recently.
“Scientists have proven that our carbon emissions are warming up the planet, melting the ice caps and causing sea water level to rise. These are all happening as we speak,” said Lee who then visited participating booths at the carnival area.
The carnival is being held to commemorate the Earth Day celebration.
Among the things on sale are environment-friendly products from organic food and beverages to household equipment such as dishwasher, toiletries, kitchen utensils, bags, plants and T-shirts.
During the launch, 12-year-old Xky Xin Kai entertained shoppers with a Mandarin song titled ‘The Earth is Sick’.
The carnival is being held daily from 10am to 10pm at the shopping mall’s concourse area till Sunday.
